A Sound of Thunder response

I was a little bummed out about how the story ended. I was looking forward to him having a successful hunt.

Socratic seminar

I rank Emmersons ideas 10 because I agree with a lot of his ideas.
1 quote I like a agree with is "Ne te quaesiveris extra" which means "do not seek for things outside yourself"
I like this because it is true and a great example. It is also different because he could've been basic and just put it in English but he switched it up. Last reason is because we often look outside to find something we have with in.

The second quote is "Every heart vibrates to that iron string"
I like this one because it is accurate on a motivational mindset.
I agree we should trust our instincts way more. And I agree we should listen to our hearts and ideas more often

The A

Dear Emmerson.

It is 2016, 175 years, 17.5 decades after you wrote your poem "Self-Reliance" and we are still reading it. First off I have to start off by saying that you really did it with this poem, you changed the game. Not only by starting your paragraph with "Ne te quaesiveris extra" which back then was a big deal because there was a format to starting paragraphs but you also discussed what so many people think about but is never discussed. You mention avoiding foolish consistency. This is big in 2016 because our education is depened on a system of grading and doing work not a system on particularly focusing on learning.. You say that we should be able to make decisions with information not used from a living education. I couldn't agree more. You talk about the youth which is big for the youth in 2016 because we are mostly judged by the label "teen"and rarely when that is used it is for a good reason. You believe that anyone can be geniuses including teens and alothough that definitely isn't a popular statement in today's time it has been proven in history that teens could be geniuses.(Alexander the Great ". I have to say that I love your logic and state of mind. I am curious to know what made you wake up one day and just write about this? What was your motivation to do this? Maybe if you weren't dead we can talk about it.

Sincerely,
Jesus Williams

IM SELF-RELIANT

"A man should learn to detect and watch that gleam of light which flashes across his mind from within, more than the lustre of the firmament of bards and sages. Yet he dismisses without notice his thought, because it is his. "
Notes:

This is saying that often we get thoughts, ideas, theory's etc.. but since it is US thinking it it doesn't matter, shouldn't matter, won't make a difference. But Emmersons saying that often we should recognize and not be afraid to speak of them.

" A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best; "
Notes:

I'm a relatable sense I understand this quote because Emmersons is saying that when we put a 100% into something we are not only satisfied with the results in the future but the work that was put in to get there.

"Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string."
Notes:

Emmerson is telling us to trust our instincts here and listen to our heart and mind more.

" Do not think the youth has no force, because he cannot speak to you and me. "
Notes:
I don't really know what Emmerson is saying here but from my understanding he's saying that just because us teens don't talk to adults like we do to other teens because we're looked at different or down on doesn't mean we don't have logic.

Last verse :
"A political victory, a rise of rents, the recovery of your sick, or the return of your absent friend, or some other favorable event, raises your spirits, and you think good days are preparing for you. Do not believe it. Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles.
Notes:
Emmerson really did it with this one. I can't really explain what he's saying because in all honesty the verse explains itself. Nothing can bring us peace like the peace we bring ourselves. Peace is self givin by us. We control it. And when he says if you think good days are preparing for you do not believe it, I feel like he's saying the good day doesn't have to be prepared because you can choose when you want it.

What do I need to work on?(Self-reliance)

I need to work on understanding Emmersons diction. It is not to different from everyday language in 2016 like most old poetry, but the style is different.

what did I do well?(self-reliance)

I feel like I did well on understanding Emmersons theme which was avoiding foolish consistency. Pretty much making decisions with out the information givin by the everyday living education.

"Ne te quaesiveris extra"

Emerson started with this phrase in the beginning of his story "Self-Reliance" it means
"Do not seek outside yourself. Look with in."

Emmersons belief on logic(Self-Reliance)

Emmerson believed that "logic was a mind parallel to the movement of the world."
Does this mean infants or brutes can be geniuses? Definitely. Alexander the Great was 13 years years old when he led his military into victory against the Persian Empire. He was considered a genius because he was outnumbered by almost twice as much men against the Persian Empire but still got a victory.

Self-Reliance's main idea.

Emmersons main idea in "Self-Reliance" is "to avoid foolish consistency. This means that individuals can make there own decisions with out relying on information gained through the everyday living education.

"Our brains aren't made for happiness. They're built for survival time"

I disagree to this. If it's a fact, I assume it was proven by science but not by faith.

FAITH-
  1. strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.

When do I speak up

I speak up when I feel like someone's being ignorant odoesn't always have to be to me. I'll always have my buddy's back, vice versa ... so if I've have ever heard someone talk or say anything negative about them I'll stand up for them definitely and when I say something I tend to raise my voice a little bit. We live in Santa Maria where you might get shot for saying something 😂 Be careful

Does dumping social media make you happier ?

I dumped Facebook around the same time as those other teenagers did. Am I happier ?I am happy I don't have to see ignorant or annoying post. And I am happier that I don't spend a large majority of my day on social media.

RESPECT MY AUTHORITY

My basketball coach is one of best authority figures. He supports me not only on the court, but as a individual and in the classroom. He understands that discipline is important on the court and will go a long way in life. I respect his authority because he's only made me a better player and a better person.

What are you willing to sacrifice to get what you want?

I understand that success doesn't come easy. Well unless you're a lottery winner... Anyhow whenever there is success, behind it came with great sacrifice. I'm willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to accomplish my goal or get what I want. Sleep, food, energy, etc.

What will I do I do in this class over the next grading period ?

In the next grading period I plan on continuing putting up blogs and understanding that Dr.Preston isn't just a traditional teacher, this isn't a traditional highschool class, and I'm not a traditional highschool student.

The Eath on Turtles Back. Authors mood.

The Earth on Turtles Back's author made it obvious that he was not only encouraging to his character but also respected the muskrat due to not the size of his body but the size of his heart. 😉

Young Goodman Brown. Authors mood.

The authors mood toward his character in the story Young Goodman Brown is not an obvious mood to find. I think he's really skeptical towards Young Goodman Brown since he's a good guy but easily arrayed by the temptation with the devil.

The Earth on Turtles Back theme

The Earth on Turtle's Back is a stroy with multiple messages but they're headed the same direction and they have to do with having heart. A muskrat doing a job that all the other animals couldn't do tells me that "heart over height"is important in life.

Young Goodman Brown's theme.

"The choices that we make define who we are "

6. What is a Socratic Seminar?

The Socratic seminar is a formal discussion, based on a text, in which the leader asks open-ended questions. Within the context of the discussion, students listen closely to the comments of others, thinking critically for themselves, and articulate their own thoughts and their responses to the thoughts of others
What is the most challenging experience you've had so far?

Problems, large and small, present themselves to us throughout our whole existence. We face challenges everyday in life, and we have yet to pick the most difficult experience. overcoming adversity is one of mans biggest hurdles.

What's my big question?

What happens to your conscious after death ?

Class notes

August 11th:
Describe your most memorable moment from class.
Coincidentally having the same birthday as Dr.Preston 🙄

August 12:
What's your favorite music and how would you describe it to a deaf person?
I listen to everything I don't necessarily have a favorite but I'm going to a rebelution concert this week so I'll say reggae. I'd describe as very positive music and soothing also.

August 16:
We use phrases like "pay attention" & "make a decision " all the time. What do they mean to you? How would you teach a child to do either? How might you approve you're abilitys in these areas?

These mean demands that are probably being said for an Important reason. my child would probably learn these by live experiences, such as small things like "what do you want to eat ? Make a decision." I can improve in these areas by learning how to focus better.

August 17:
Why do people argue? What factors should I determine who wins in an argument?

People argue in my opinion just to prove a point. If someone isn't trying to prove something in an argue there really isn't any reason to argue. Facts and evidence win arguments.

Ancient Stories

The language in this text is very similar to the everyday language we speak everyday. Especially for an ancient story were  the language is always broken and different. The reason it is similar to language is because there are multiple animals and they're not really arguing but calaborating on how they're gonna get this lady back to where she came from.

The Earth on the Turtle's back

I didn't exactly know what the poem was trying to say, so much was going on at once. But it seemed as a lot of stress was relieved when the muskrat said "I will bring up the Earth or die trying". This to me shows a lot of heart and determination. So maybe what the poem is trying to say is that we will be  faced with obstacles everyday and no matter how impossible they seem if you give it your all till you have no more you can overcome anything.
